The Perth weather radar shows real-time rainfall and storm activity across the south-west of Western Australia. Combining the live forecast above with the radar loop helps you judge when showers or thunderstorms will arrive in your suburb. The radar covers most of the Perth metropolitan area and the Swan Coastal Plain.

How does the Perth radar work?

BOM’s radar at Serpentine (64 km range) and the newer 512 km Doppler radar at Watheroo track precipitation. The 64 km image gives finer detail over the city, while the 512 km broad view shows approaching systems from the Indian Ocean. Use the 128 km or 256 km loops for a middle ground. Refresh every six minutes.

What can the radar tell you?

Rain bands, isolated showers, thunderstorms and hail show as coloured echoes. Blue and green are light rain; yellow, orange and red indicate heavy rain or potential storms. Compare the radar with the live forecast above to see if a storm is heading your way. Also check the severe weather warning page for thunderstorm alerts.

Why does the radar sometimes show false echoes?

Non‑weather objects like birds, insects, dust and even wind farms can return radar signals. Known as “biological clutter”, these echoes usually move slowly or stay fixed. Cross‑reference with perth weather on BOM to confirm real rain.

How far ahead can the radar predict rain?

The radar shows what is happening now, not a forecast. Use the 64 km loop to extrapolate movement for the next 30–60 minutes. For longer outlooks, check weather perth 14 days or the forecast page for Perth Weather.

What is the difference between 64 km and 512 km radar?

The 64 km radar gives high‑resolution detail over Perth itself – ideal for street‑level rain intensity. The 512 km radar covers all of south‑west WA, useful for spotting large weather systems days out. Use both together.
